I tried upgrading my iPhone 4 and iPad to IOS 5 but it said I would lose photos, books etc. I tried doing a backup first but it wouldn't allow it. How do I upgrade to IOS 5 and still keep all my stuff. There's books I've bought I don't want to purchase again. Photos that can't be replaced of my best friend who died recently. Please tell me how to make thus work. I will be eternally grateful.

I updated my iPad 2 and iPhone 4 to iOS 5 and did not lose anything. I update via iTunes on a Mac. No issues.
