I'm trying to download an emoji app but it won't let me because I need iOS.5?? What the heck is that??

iOS 5 is the newest operating system for Apple products, currently it is 5.1 , what iOS are you running, to find out go to settings, then about, and then version, it should tell you there.
Do not update to 5.1 if you have a Jailbroken device as 5.1 is not yet Jailbroken.

If you plug your iPad into iTunes then it will inform you that a newer version of iOS is available to download, click the yes button and it should automatically install, let us know how you get on

Make sure you have the latest iTunes installed on your PC/Mac and its a good idea to disable virus protection and firewall for the duration of the update. This is a large update and could take quite some time to update and is dependent on how many apps and data you have installed already.
