IPad Air as modem

Hi,
I was told that I could use my iPad as a wireless modem for my laptop (Asus) but I can't get the two to connect. Any suggestions?
Sometimes I want to connect to internet with my laptop but don't want to pay for the extra connection.

This will only be possible if your iPad is Wi-Fi + cellular. You'll find "Personal Hotspot" in your Settings list. Tap it and turn it on. Then you'll find what to do:

Same with iPhones depending on your carrier Some carriers disable that feature,
