iPad / iTunes sync stuck at last step

Whenever I sync my iPad 3 with iTunes, it doesn't complete the last step but just gets stuck "Waiting for items to copy".

It used to be with "Step 7 of 7: Syncing Genius data", so I deleted all Genius data and links. Now it is stuck with "Step 6 of 6: Syncing Artwork to iPad".

What can I do to avoid having to just exit by unplugging the iPad? (NB the computer i run iTunes on is PC running Windows 7 Professional.
