ipad itunes won't sync with new macbook air

I get an error message when I connect my ipad 1 to my new macbook air saying I need to update my itunes to 10.1 or later. I can't figure out how to do this, I tried going on safari online to download the latest version but get redirected to apples ipad site. Its not in the APP store either. How do I update to the latest version so that I can sync my itunes stuff /transfer it to my new macbook? thanks. (can I transfer all of it, even the items that I didn't specifically purchase on the ipad, or do I have to go with homeshare to get all of my library looking the same across all my devices? )

You need to update itunes on the Mac not your ipad.
