iPad Photograph Size

I didn't know about changing the Dropbox settings on the iPad app - so I changed it up to "Upload Quality" high for both Video and Photo Quality.

Try setting to "original size"? It seems sporatic on which file this happens with for some reason.

I set them to "Original Size" in Dropbox - thanks for the heads-up.

The problem doesn't seem to be with Dropbox, it seems that iPad "Photos" automatically reduces image size when it exports.

And the size issue seems to be pretty random but all of my 3mb images have been reduced to under 1mb.

When I open them back up in Photoshop on my PC, they are still their physical size (ie 20"x30") - but their resolution has to be a lot lower because of their file size going down from 3mb to under 1.
And this concerns me when it comes to printing.

I can't see any settings or reason for this???

Hi,

I've noticed that when I transfer photographs to the iPad (1) they are greatly reduced in size and resolution.

Is there a way of upping photograph sizes/resolution somewhere within the iPad's settings?

I was hoping to do post-processing work using some of the awesome apps on the iPad (like Snapseed) but when I export my work the resolution its really small and I can't print at the sort of sizes I was hoping for.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Derrick

Hi Derrick,

I have a solution to your problem. I had the exact same problem.

I will take you step by step what I did.

(1) Purchase the app Photosync for your iPad $2

(2) Download the free Photosync application for your home Mac or PC (so that's two apps you will need from the same company)

(3) make sure that your iPad is on with Photosync running (very important, if Photosync is not running while you do the next step then you iPad will export a low resolution file after you have finished playing with Snapseed)

(4) drag and drop the image/s you want onto the Photosync application that sits on your Mac home computers dock.

(5) This process will sync the high resolution files to Photosync on the iPad in full resolution.

(6) Open your image up in Snapseed, play around, when done, "save" image.

(7) Photosync will make a high resolution copy of the image you just manipulated in Snapseed.

(8) In the Photosync library on your iPad "select" the image you have just worked on

(9) On your iPad, in Photosync, in the top right corner there is a red button thingy with two arrows in a circular form. touch that and select "sync selected".

(10) It will ask you "where do you want to transfer to?"

(11) Select "computer"

(12) It will ask you "please select device to sync to"

(13) Select your home computer

(14) Photosync will send a high resolution file to your home computer and will be in its own file called "camera roll"

Apples own Photo library runs in the background as all third party app developers have to use Apples own Photo library. But somehow using Photosync you don't have problems of reducing file sizes.

The only time you will need to use Apples ow photo library is when you wan to delete files from you iPad.

But please make sure that Photosync is running on your iPad when you drag and drop the image/s on your home computer

That's it.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,
Ben

Hi Ben,
I just sent you a PM.
Thank you so much - this works perfectly!
Excellent find... I doff my hat to you :)

Hi Derrick,

It's my pleasure.

The reason I bought the iPad was so I could use Snapseed so I wasn't going to give up until I found a cure.

This is how I came across your post. Entering key words related to the topic in Google and your post came up.

I'm surprised there is not more discussion on this, especially from professional photographers, as I can really see this way of processing images taking off in the near future and being built into the photographer workflow.

Anyway, take care & I'm glad I could help you out.

Cheers,
Ben

Hello Ben,

I've read your solution regarding snapseed reducing the resolution of the image... I've tried that.. and it works the resolution after editing is still intact... Now, my issue is although the resolution stays the same I'm concerned about the DPI.. from 300 to 72dpi.. is there any solution about this? I've read that DPI affects in printing and I'm really serious about snapseed to be my tool in photography especially in weddings.. Hope to hear from you soon! Thanks in advance!

Hi I also have this problem, I have downloaded Photosync and used Snapseed to edit 16mb, 11mb Jpg files, also NEF Raw files, however the exported file is always under 5mb. I can't understand why I can't edit a file and save it without further compression. I asked the question to Snapseed support 5 days ago but have not yet received an answer. Any ideas would be really appreciated.

Doesn't Snapseed save files in a completely local format? When I have tried to edit Snapseed files with PhotoShop, it says it doesn't recognize the format. That may explain why the low bit count. (But maybe I am confusing Snapseed with iPhoto.)

On another somewhat unrelated topic, I recently tried to upload Snapseed products to my Flickr account and it won't go. Has anyone had any luck with that?
