Ipad % Seems to be Dropping Rapidly?

Hope someone can help... we are retired, and we bought an Ipad 2 last August. In the past few weeks, we've noticed that the battery % seems to be dropping rapidly (perhaps it always has, but we never noticed?). For example, one night while no one was using it, it dropped from the mid-40s down into the 20s.

After we first noticed this, we took the Ipad to the local Apple Store. A Genius said he'd found an app that hadn't closed, and that would solve the problem. It didn't, so we took the Ipad back yesterday, and a different Genius told us "an app had infected the Ipad" and we needed to pay $250 for an Ipad2 replacement so we did. (Our 1-year Warranty had ended 10 days previously.)

This morning we noticed a similar overnight drop on the new/replacement unit - overnight it dropped from 79% to 72% again, while we were asleep and the Ipad cover was closed. Neither of us uses the Ipad at night, and the Ipad cover is always closed. The Settings indicate it turns off at 2 minutes, but we do occasionally hear a beep (new Mail?) even with the cover closed.

Is all this normal? How much should a working Ipad 2 drop overnight? Is 79 to 72 a typical overnight drop? Did we waste our $250 on the Ipad replacement?

Thanks much for any help!
