IPAD Tablet with GPS

I am about to purchase either an iPad or an Android tablet in order to use the Viewranger application.
I do not want a monthly contract with a phone service provider - I want a tablet with a GPS chip that will interface with the application and will show current location on the map.
I am trying to find out if the iPad has a GPS chip or equivalent that will meet my requirement.

the iPad with 3G/4G has a GPS chip, the wifi-only version does not. No contracts are required, and the 3G/4G radio does not even have to be on.
