Ipad upgrade

My friend came over and I saw his iPad was upgraded to 6.1.2. When I search for upgrades I just keep getting a message saying that my software is up to date or whatever. But I'm still on 6.1. Why won't my iPad find the new upgrade?

If your using ipad 1 then it's not applicable

If your using ipad 1 then it's not applicable

He doesn't have an iPad 1, as his iPad is currently on iOS 6.1.
