What's new

Ipad v ipad mini

iPad is higher resolution. The mini is standard resolution but more portable because it is smaller and lighter. They run the same apps.

It's a shrunken iPad 2. I have one and it kick a**. The size is perfect and battery life is great. I am giving this one to my daughter for Xmas and getting the 4g version. Hotspot takes too long to connect to my phone but that is any device so I don't know if its Verizon or apple in general.

So why do you prefer a regular iPad instead of an iPad mini?

I own an iPad 3, and an iPhone 4S, so that's why I think that an iPad mini is perfect for some people that only want to use just one option. What's your opinion?

There is no really big difference between the mini and the 9'7 inch iPad just the size factor and the 9'7inch iPad has a retina display even though the mini doesn't have retina display i prefer the mini because its light compact and easy to carry around with you perfect for traveling around when you have to go places or do something or take notes some where.I like the 9'7 inch iPad but its just a bit heavy to hold after a while because of its weight factor. The mini does come in its own when it comes down to the weight factor so light to hold and you can hold it all day without your hand hurting. That one thing that sold the mini to me the weight factor and i think the screen is a perfect size for reading and surfing and checking Emails and playing games etc.My iPad 9'7 doesn't really get used much now because i just the mini for everything except Watching movies or Tv series i will use the 9'7 inch iPad for that because i just don't think the iPad mini just not quite there for that sort of thing because its watchable don't get me wrong but i prefer the 9'7 inch for that sort of thing.

Thank you pommie82, your answer really help me, because I was think about to change the regular iPad for a new iPad mini because of the weight, but I can still use the iPhone for simple things, and the 9'7 for watching movies, photos, videos etc...with a better screen.

Hi samita,
iam glad that you read my post and that you have made your discussion and i do hope that you are happy with it too i love the 9'7 inch iPad for movies and love the mini for everything else.

Have both the 3 and the mini. Prefer the 3 for videos, general web use. Prefer the mini for reading books and light email use. There is a time and place for both. Love the mini's light weight and small er form factor.

I recently was deciding between the IPad mini and IPad 2... I went with the IPad 2 but I may pick up the mini in a month or so from now. The only reason I went with the 2 was that I wanted the bigger screen since I already have a Nexus7 and Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. The mini looks hot though. Can't wait to try one out in the Apple store. I'm very pleased with the 2 though... Mostly I just browse the web on it so the extra real estate is great.

So how much faster is the fourth-generation iPad than the iPad Mini? Raw benchmarks show a yawning gap between Apple's newest tablets.

Though benchmarks are typically more theoretical than real-world (that is, you won't necessarily feel a big speed boost using everyday apps), they're instructive because they show the potential of the underlying silicon.

... iPad Mini: The new Mini and the older iPad 2 test at 752 and 755 on Geekbench, respectively, according to CNET.

Both devices test similarly because they use Apple's older A5 chip. And by comparison, the iPhone 4S -- which also uses an A5 chip -- scored 629.

Similar scores have been published elsewhere for the Mini.

... So the tradeoff for a smaller, thinner, cheaper device is that you get old Apple silicon -- not unlike what's happened to the MacBook in the past.

... The take-away is that consumers have a pretty stark choice between a smaller, less-expensive, lower-performance iPad Mini and a heavier, more-expensive, high-performance 4th gen iPad.

I saw an ipad Mini at Best Buy, and the screen looked better than I thought it would. No, its not as impressive as the screen on the 3 or 4, but fine for most purposes.

Except that in the real world, you never experience lower performance on the mini because it runs all software the same as the 4th gen. What you do experience is lessor visuals. This is the main impact all around. It seems the reviewers are doing a poor job getting this point across.

I think that's mostly the case now, but will change as the balance tips toward ownership of iPad 3, 4 and beyond. None of us knows when that will be, and we can't tell which developers will continue to support a variety of apps.

Best to buy knowing what you're getting now, and what could be in store for your device. Personally, I've already noticed my iPad 2 showing its limitations in apps crashing, and slowness and crashes on graphic-rich websites. That's because of its limited RAM, which is the same in iPad mini. YMMV, of course.

I recently read some articles claiming that retina screens are already being produced or designed or something for an iPad mini 2. I may just wait for a mini 2 if its coming out soon.... We'll see...
