I don't really want to pat music fom the iPod app via HDMI through my TV so I connected ATV direct to the amplifier via the Toslink (fibre optic) connection.
This works but is quite erratic. Sometimes I get sound, often I don't.
I have been experimenting and it seems that you need to put the ATV through a Sleep/Wake cycle, which causes the output selection icon to disappear the reappear in the iPad app (next to the volume control). It then seems to be possible to direct sound output to ATV.
The TV has to be on that you can see what you are doing, although once the sound starts, it can be turned off.
This all seems a little complcated to me. Any suggestions?
