9to5 Mac has a report today, based on claims made by SuperApple.cz, that says that Apple is currently working on two different iPad versions, one of which they say is 5.7 inches, and one they say is just under 6 inches. According to the website, they have been given this information by two separate sources. The sources also say that the new device will be launched by Apple this Fall. 9to5 Mac says that although this new 6-inch device is being referred to as an iPad, it is possible that it is in fact an iPod touch. As 9to5 Mac points out, Apple CEO Steve Jobs has categorically stated in the past that Apple is not planning to release an iPad with a smaller screen, but nothing has been said about an iPod touch with a larger screen. Like 9to5 Mac says, a slightly bigger iPod touch makes a lot of sense, especially given its popularity as a portable games console. Other reports are saying that Apple is planning a “Fall surpriseâ€, a mysterious new launch. As ever, watch this space!

I just don't buy it. Why would someone want something that is too small to replace a laptop and too big to fit in a pocket....it just makes no sense!

Meaningless. Jobs also at various times said Apple wouldn't get into the phone business and wasn't interested in the tablet market. There will be a smaller tablet shipped by Thanksgiving. Probably a 7" model. Whether it's called an iPad or an iPod Touch is irrelevant (except perhaps to SJ).

I hope that they do so that I can make fun of friends by asking them if it came with sandpaper to file down their fingertips.

no, not smaller, the ipad is already barely big enough for some thing I do.

What's up with the 17", that's what I'm talking about

Damn I want one with a 1280 screen at least. That 6 inch size would mean purely stylus operation. My fingers already feel big with the current version.....
