Is it possible to combine mobile applications folders?

I have an iPod touch 3g and an iPad 1g. I noticed the other day they both keep mobile app folders in each of their iTunes folders. Does anyone know if it is possible to combine and share a single mobile app folder? I have many apps that are duplicated and it's using quite a bit of hard disk space.
