Is the ipad 2 the ultimate travel campanion? Over s laptop?

How do you connect your iPad if you stay somewhere that requires an Ethernet cable to connect to the Internet?

Certainly depends on needs, but I'm heading out on business on Monday and it will be with my Ipad2 only.

(1) Call the front desk
(2) Ask for a list of nearby hotels.
(3) Call hotels until you find one with wifi.
(4) Move.

Jsh1120 - great advice, but I'd probably check first to make sure that my hotel had Wi-Fi, preferably free! :D

Another option is the carry a small router that can connect to a cabled ethernet connection and provide 'protected' Wi-Fi access to a number of compatible devices - I own the Zuni router shown below (INFO HERE) - now I've only used this once (worked fine) because most of the places that I've stayed offer Wi-Fi in the rooms - this is likely a fading necessity? But I guess that if you needed to pay for a wired ethernet connection and had 'mates' in adjacent rooms, then one of these devices might provide multiple wireless connections on one charge (i.e. $ fee)?

Now the one place that I did use this router was in a hotel w/ just a wired paid ($10/day) option in the room - my wife & I were able to connect our iPad, VISTA computer, iPod, and Nook via Wi-Fi, so just another consideration - :)

We just recently went up to our cottage for 5 days where I brought my iPad. Since we do not have Internet service up there, I got by with using a virgin mobile broadband device. So like Girardmand was stating- there are many ways around wifi issues or lack of in my situation! It worked well-but it certainly would not be capable of watching video etc--too slow of speed. I was a happy camper- kept me connected with the forum and my email!!

Thank you. I was thinking about what to take on a cruise The last time I went on a cruise, the room only had an Ethernet connection and Wi-Fi was only available on the lobby decks.

Hi everyone I am new to the forum but I am looking for help. I am a new iPad 2 owner and I have to say that I am a little disappointed. The sales person I had at radio shack led me to believe that I would be able to use my iPad wireless anywhere I went by synching the iPad to my phone. However I can't seem to figure out what I need to do to be able to use this thing anywhere I go. Someone please help. Thank you in advance.

Search for "tethering" and whatever smart phone model you have. Lots of threads on the forum on how-to.

For me it is. I don't go anywhere without it. Well, i don't take it to dinner.... anymore.... LOL

Hahahha,
sometimes I'm taking it to the dinner as well, especially if I am abroad and need online translation of the card.

Despite my snarky response above, I, too, use a dedicated mobile hotspot with my iPad. (Samsung unit from Verizon.) It provides both far better 3G service than many hotels, it also provides 4G/LTE service in areas where it is currently available. It works quite well though it does require a $50 per month charge (for 5gigs of download) on a two year contract. I've learned not to rely on hotels that offer "free" or even "paid" wifi. It is frequently so bad that it's worthless.

I travel alot for my work and i have ditched the laptop and it accessories item for the Ipad2 and it basic accessories for use on the road for it does the work of three devices for me-N1 -surf the web & answer personal emails to the family along with video face time with the family -N2-MP3 player with all the music i personaly like N3 playing a few game's i like on the ipad instead of the laptop .

The wieght of just the ipad and it accessories in own little bag thrown into my daypack with book's and few odd's & end's in the bag make's it perfect for travel .

That my 2.cents on the subect

Definitely! I go to south America for a month every summer to visit family. I used to bring my laptop but last year I just brought the iPad. It was much more easy to deal with at the airport through all the security and whatnot, it it was more portable to use around the house. The only negative is the limited storage, I wish I coulve brought all my videos...

My wife and I are taking a long flight in Feb. I plan on loading my iPad with some current movies and music to help the hours pass. The iPad seems to have a longer battery life than most laptops and on a non stop flight you can't charge the battery.

Also bought noise cancelling ear buds and a small amp to help out when both sets are connected.

Will report back after we do this.

I still may buy a MacBook Pro later.
