The MAC is also burned into hardware but there is software that can alter the one used during network communications.

To the OP: I would still go into a police station and make a report. Hopefully you have the serial number and such so that can be entered into the databases used by law enforcement. If the device is ever recovered and the serial is run then you'll have a good chance of getting it back.
