Itunes and not synching purchased content

Hi , I am total noob with ipad/itunes , but I have had a Ipod awhile , is there a way to prevent Ipads synching with purchased music , I am trying to move some music over but my space is being filled up with stuff from my Itunes/ipod and although I am saying only selected playlists, it still has my purchased on there.
