What's new

Just retired

I'm in the market for a new ipad with retina display. I would like to get away from my pc and use the ipad to manage and edit photos, do searches and maybe read books. I'm not sure if I should get it with 16 gb or 32 gb. Also, do I need cellular?

Welcome aboard!

Will you have access to wifi points if you need to access "data" - if not, you might consider cellular service so that you have access as needed to email, etc...

Welcome on board. I would recommend a minimum of 32 gb iPad for your needs. Lots of photo editing software available for the iPad......

Hi Barleeharvest - welcome to the forum! :)

I bought my first (and still only) iPad2 in spring of 2011, retired at the end of June the same year - I support the recommendation for the 32 GB model (even double that if you plan to put on a LOT of music & videos) - plenty of excellent photo apps (nothing perfect so you may want a few?) - the iPad can certainly replace many of the functions of a desktop computer (of course, depending on your needs which I've found have become simpler in retirement - no 'job-related' responsibilities) - e.g. when my wife & I are 'on the road' (once or twice a month now), I take only my iPad for our email/web browsing needs (along w/ a BT keyboard) - I bought the Wi-Fi option only, so our out of town stays are virtually always where Wi-Fi is available - if that is your situation, then a cellular plan may not be needed? Good luck & hope to see your posting - Dave :)

Hi Dave,

Would you believe I just read. Your "thread"? Wow, there's a lotto learn!!! I too am recently retired and got my iPad for travelling and just to make life simpler and easier. I did get the 64 gb with cellular. I take tons of photos, now that I have the time and because, I always think I need more space! Thank you for your note.
Any further advice? I'm currently inquiring re security for my iPad. What do you have.
Cheers
Barb

Hi Barb, re your security point. That's one of the nice things about owning the iPad. You don't need to worry about security or any of that "virus protection" stuff that, so far, is the peace of mind we enjoy about our iPads. The iPad operating system is a closed system that operates on individual applications ("apps") that are carefully vetted for you to download from the App Store.
I think your choice of 64 gb cellular is an excellent choice where you take a lot of photos.
Regards, Andrew

Hi Dave, Thank you for your response, that's such good news. By the way, what is taps talk?

Hi Barb,

Tapatalk is a forum reader app, quite a few folks here use it for accessing this forum, personally I use our own forum App, it just suits me but if you follow multiple forums then apps like Tapatalk and Forum Runner are excellent.
