Local Question: 3G on the DC Metro?

My wife used my iPad to surf while we drove across 3 states to visit Grandma and loves it. Now she wants one. She commutes into DC each day from Virginia and wants to be able to surf while on the Metro (the subway). I can't get a straight answer on current availability of a good signal. So do I buy her an AT&T (like mine) or a Verizon model?

Does anyone local have experience with this?

You're probably more likely to find out by walking up and asking people using an iPad on your Metro line.

When I took the yellow and blue lines, my AT&T phone signal was spotty at best, but that was several years ago.
