Locked ipad

So I have ver 4.2.1 on my ipad and recently the batt died when I was dl'ing a game. Since then, it just sits on the blank screen with the apple logo on it. I tried connecting to the itunes but it says it's locked with a password and it must be unlocked. Unfortunately, the screen never lets me enter my pw, it just has the apple logo screen.

Any ideas? I tried to reset the unit via the reset pinhole button but no change...

Press and hold power/sleep button and home button at the same time until it shuts down (ignore slide message if it comes up) and restarts
