I put Ubuntu on my desktop last year after tired of the constant virus attacks on Windows, I planned to wait on getting a Ipad but then I got to play with a friends...sold! My next laptop will be a Mac, I'm hooked!

Welcome to the forum! You really don't need to sync very often either if you don't mind downloading your Podcasts by hand. I really only sync as a back up for stuff I've purchased and sometimes to get my podcasts synced with each other between the iPhone and the iPad. Other than that you don't really need a computer with it!
