Messages on iPad

I bought he iPad 3 at the end of march for myself then last weekend I bought one for my boyfriend for his birthday. His mum has an iPhone and I can send her messages and video call her for free just by putting in her mobile number.....but I don't know how to send messages to my boyfriends iPad without us both downloading a messaging app. I'm trying to use the 'messages' that is on the first screen of the iPad (green box with speech bubble) any advice? Tia x

You need to put in his apple Id in your contacts. Then you can message him

By using TextPlus app, you can send message to any phone without any connection but you have to write your name each and every time.

To be precise, he needs to set up iMessage to receive imessages at his email address. Then you can iMessage him at that email address. He won't get email there, just the messages you send through iMessage. Go to Settings then iMessages and set it up there.
