Open iTunes on your computer
Plug in the iPad of course, then select the iPad on the left column
Go to info, and tick the outlook calendar
Run a synch and that's it.

Or...

1. Go to settings/mail, contacts, calendar ...and ADD Account.

2. once set...go back to the mail account thru your settings and turn on calendar.

This will automatically sync with your iPad and outlook without having to connect.

Thanks very much. Having searched the internet, i had come across this after i asked the question - and wasn't it easy! i now need to sort out my tiscali/talk talk email problem as i can't access my emails using T/TT when i'm out and about.

Hmm, I think that setting only applies to a Gmail / google calendar, nothing to do with Microsoft Outlook.
Have to use iTunes as I mentioned previously.

If his outlook is connecting to an exchange server then he can use Skimonkeys method.

Please explain, as the OP mentioned nothing about having exchange or even google calendars, but wanted a simplistic method of which the iTunes one is , google calendars have known issues with exchange and are unreliable.
Adding another calendar thereby creating a 3 way synch just invites issues with Outlook and it's already troublesome .pst/.ost data files is not a good suggestion in my opinion.

I sync to both my gmail account by exchange and my work account outlook server by exchange and have never had problems. Its not a three way synch, everything syncs to the central server, thats the point of exchange. I've never dealt with .pst/.ost files.

I was just pointing out that depending on the OPs configuration, skimonkeys method is valid, while you had said it had nothing to do with outlook. I agree we don't know the Op's configuration and if its a home setup he's likely just using a local outlook calendar and then your method is the correct one, but its not the only one, again depending on setup.

I see that Defbref has already responded it can be used for both gmail and outlook. In fact I have set my outlook to merge with my gmail calendar to sync directly into my iPad. So any changes I make will immediately change on my iPad once I open my calendar. Just wanted to throw out other options bosvaark--nothing wrong with a few other options other than iTunes.

Again, thanks Defbref for giving your response.

I've said it before, but I highly recommend avoiding the iTunes calendar and contact sync method; unless it's the only option.

Far better to sync both Outlook on the computer and the iPad to the same online source; such as GMail or iCloud.
