Does anyone know why some shops can have more habitats than others when they are on the same level?

You don't have to have all your habitats on display as you can have far more habitats than you shop can hold. In the earlier stages of the game I bought the cheapest habitats and then bought the more attractive ones later on. I also change the theme of my shop sometimes and some habitat styles look better with the decor.
The reason you see less habitats for some players is because they don't choose to display any empty habitats and just put them out as needed.

you can unlock new slots as your level advances, but you also have the option to unlock them at earlier levels by using berries. those other players that are at the same level as you but with more habitats chose pay slots with their berries.

let me also add how to use berries to add extra slot. go to the habitat section, touch any habitat, and hit on the preview button even if it is dark in color. a pop up menu will tell you that you've reached the limit for habitat placement and then offer you to add extra slot.

Omg thank you for showing me how to do that!! I didn't know you could open up slots with berries!? Crazy. Thank you also for the eggs you sent. Oh...sorry my long eared snorker doesn't have any more eggs. I keep him as a mascot...lol.
