Mute switch

The mute switch does not work at all. Is that normal?
My iPad 2 is running iOS 4.3.1.

Go into settings and general

You can choose what the switch does

Mute or lock rotation

Or do you mean that even when muted you still hear sounds?

Yes, that's what I mean.
I have chosen for the option mute switch already, it just doesn't do anything.
Well, it gives the "mute symbol", but I still hear my music, or video or whatever.
Weird?

The mute switch only mutes system alert notification sounds (like push notifications when you get an email), not for muting audio from music or videos.

O rly?... But.. I am quite sure that the mute switch on my iPad 1 earlier muted the music too,..

I have an iPad1 still on iOS 4.2 and I can confirm that the mute switch does indeed only mute system sounds - such as email notification - but does not mute music. To mute music you have to turn the volume down or - short cut - hold the volume rocker switch in the down direction for a second and it will switch to zero-volume immediately.
