my ipad disconnects when syncing

Hi folks I'm new to this ( i will post an intro later), but for now i'm hoping you might be able to help. I'm syncing my new Ipad to a faily old PC but running the latest itunes albeit slowly. I've been reading the threads regarding power issues with USB's connections. While the itunes tries to sync my pictures it goes through a process of optimising and the transfering. Meanwhile the ipad is connected via usb but showing (not charging) in the power window. I know this is not the case because it is increasing in battery again albeit slowly. After about 15 minutes sometimes longer it come up with an error saying the disc can't be found, and the ipad disappears from the list in itunes. I'm thinking it might be a power issue with the USB, and yes i have tried connecting to a different USB. Any thoughts.

Are you using the cable that came with the iPad or a cable you already had? I used my iPod touch cable at first and had many synch issues. When I finally noticed that the cables are different, and switched, all my issues vanished.

USBILL's idea is a good start, I've run into the same problem with cables. As far as the charging goes, unless the iPad was very low, almost discharged, the usb port should supply enough current to slowly charge the iPad and sync with iTunes. As you say it's slowly charging, I don't think you have a problem with the usb port.

Have you tried rebooting the PC after installing itunes, also try resetting the iPad. Close all apps then - Hold down the HOME, bottom button, and the SLEEP, top button, for about 10 seconds until the Apple icon appears. Allow it to reboot, it may take a few minutes, don't panic like I did, wait for it to reboot. Cures many weird problems on iOS devices.

If those ideas don't work, try re-installing itunes, the windows drivers may be faulty, or as a last resort, delete iTunes and re-install iTunes.

many thanks

so much new information, I will try this when I get home and hopefully this might be the issue. Do you know if the Iphone 4 cables are the same as I pad?

to USBILL and POCOBEAR many thanks. i have an Iphone as well as my ipad and given that the cables are identical i assumed they were the same. So when i swapped the cables over low and behold no problems. Apple really should differentiate the two and make it obvious that the cables are different. there is also a difference between the chargers not that you would know to look at them. thanks again :)
