I don't have apple care, is replacing the screen possible and if so, how? Or do I need to purchase a new iPad?

What model iPad? iPad 1 might not be worth the trouble if you compare resale value vs. repair cost.

While I have no direct knowledge I've seen posts and ads around the 150 or so area. The few ads I have read the vendors also are explicit that they cannot guarantee the case will not be scratched or otherwise damaged due to the way the iPad is assembled. Opening the case is a delicate and appears often challenging task.

DIY videos abound on you tube if you are so inclined to attempt repair yourself or just to know what the process entails.
