If you subscribe to their MobileMe cloud service and have a MobileMe email address then you'll find that, under the MobileMe settings ('Settings', 'Mail, Contacts, Calendars', 'Accounts', 'MobileMe', 'Find My iPad', 'On', 'Allow') allows the iPad to be remotely located from a Mac running the 'Find My iPad' app. It also allows you to remotely 'wipe' (erase) all your iPad files - for example if they contained personal or confidential data.
I wonder if anyone has actually ever recovered their iPad using this facility? I don't have a Mac, so I can't use it. Otherwise I could hide my iPad and then try and find it.......

It showed the map of the location on my map ap. I then locked the iPad from the iPhone and sent a message to the screen. "You have my iPad. Please return it from where you took it".
I showed the tracking info the the police officer, but nothing ever came of it. The theft is still under investigation.................. Within 48 hours the iPad stopped tracking and could not be found by the Find My iPhone ap any longer. Either the battery died or the perp smash the iPad.
All in all a fun experience, but the cop told me not to go the location myself. I've ordered a relacement iPad and tracking shows that it arriving today. YEA!!!!!!!!!
