New to the Whole IPad Thing

Hello All,
I have had my IPad 2 for about a week now. I can honestly say that it is a little overwhelming at times so I am glad that this site exists. So, thank you. My question is though, what exactly is jailbreaking, and what are the benefits? My apologies if this question has already been answered. It is 5.0.1 if that matters.

If you're already overwhelmed, best to not consider jailbreaking until you're comfortable with operating your stock iPad.
