New user - new ipad

I have just bought the new Ipad and enjoy using it. My Ipad is 16GB so I am anxious to use Icloud to keep storage on the Ipad at a minimum. I have downloaded some apps that are storage hogs so I have followed the instructions in implementing Icloud use including buying additional storage. However when I back up, nothing goes to the cloud. I have synced to my Imac and all my apps are there, but not in the cloud. Any suggestions?
