Hello All,

I'm new to the forum here. My name is Rebecca and I'm from the dull depths of the world known as England :) I got my iPad1 just before the iPad2 came out (I wasn't that bothered about wanting the 2) and as a lot of people have said I am having trouble with the device since upgrading to ios5. It started with safari just closing on me but recently one of my favourite apps, a home design app, keeps crashing half way through projects, normally when entering 3d mode. I am running on a jail broken device and I have upgraded to 5.1 in the hope that this may resolve the problems I was having but its the same.... May be worse... I have reset the device to factory settings and wiped the device and run a back up....

I looked at a few websites and some recommended downloading sbs settings and viewing the amount of ram in use.... Right now my screen keeps varying between 13mb of ram and 82mb of ramwith only the iPad form app running in the tray when double clicking the home button.... I don't have push notifications running on any of the apps. The only thing I haven't done is reset the iPad and set it up as new without running a back up...

I am not the most familiar with I devices as such, my iPod is a 120gb click wheel and my phone is an android so any advice in idiots terms would be great :) I have googled the idea of downgrading iOS but as far as I can tell I cannot do that as I don't have the shsh blobs to be able to do it....

If anyone has any ideas that would be great... I am half expecting it to be a "hey, it's behind with the times, get a new one...." :)

Thanks in advance for any help :)

P.s I am not running winterboard or any theme changing apps :)

Hi, Rebecca, and welcome to the forum. Good to "see" you and I hope you enjoy your visits.

Unfortunately, I think the answer really is: "get a new iPad." Sorry. The iPad1 only has 256 MB of RAM and it just may not be able to handle the demands of the app you are trying to run. You've already closed everything out and have only that app running - so I can't even suggest that as an answer. And, there is no solution to low RAM other than upgrade to a new device.

However, since you are jailbroken and have SBSettings installed, try this:

1) Close out all the running apps from the multitask bar

2) Bring down the SBSettings window and select the small button/toggle labeled "Power." When pressed, one of the options is "Safe Mode." Press that. Your iPad will enter Safe Mode, which is a way to turn off all extensions running on the iPad (due to the jai break). You iPad will respring and come back with a message pop-up that reads a whole bunch of warning messages and tells you the iPad is "now running in Safe Mode. All extensions that support this safety system are disabled." Press the okay button.

Your iPad will look funny (will look stock, your icons may be out of order, out of sequence or even out of folders). That's okay - it's only temporary. See this for more info on Safe Mode, if you wish to know: http://www.ipadforums.net/showthread.php?t=51175

Now, with Safe Mode still going, find and run the app that constantly crashes (you may have to search for it as it may not be where you put it due to Safe Mode).

Hopefully, the app will run and not crash. Closing everything out and then being in Safe Mode should free up enough RAM to enable you to run that app.

Once you are done with the app, exit Safe Mode (swipe down from the status bar) and your iPad will respring. After the respring, it should look "normal."

If this process works, it will be what you have to do every time you want to run that RAM-intensive app.

Hopefully, this will help you run that app. If it doesn't and the app still crashes (because of low RAM), then I'm afraid you are back at my first answer: you'll have to get a new iPad (and thus more RAM).

Good luck and let us know how this goes.

Hi Marylin,

Thank you for your time in responding to my "dilemma" but unfortunately, it looks like a new device is the way forward... I tried the safe mode and it does the same. I can make the projects smaller, for example doing one room at a time rather than designing a whole apartment so to speak and it works better, still the occasional crash... Fortunately home design isn't my job, just a hobby. I love my gadgets but sometimes it'd be good for technology to slow down a little bit :)

Thanks again for your time.

Rebecca

Only thing is, is that I have to hold off on buying one for a little while, currently in mad saving mode to take my BF and his daughter with me to meet my family in Upstate NY for Christmas this year (we live in the UK and he is from a country not enrolled in the Esta/Green card scheme) so we have to pay for a visa as well as flights etc, which together is going to cost over £1500... plus spending money as well... :( I looked at recycling my iPad which is 1st gen, 32gb with wifi and 3G but to go through the Apple recycle thing you only get £150 which they then refurbish and sell for nearly double what they pay for it... a new iPad is £579 (with same storage and wifi/3g as my current one) so will have to make do for a while :)

Bummer on the having to wait for a new iPad. Cool on the planned trip, however. I live in upstate New York (well, more western side than up). IMNSHO, some of the prettiest country anywhere. :)

Enjoy your trip here. And, do hang around this forum for a while. Pretty friendly bunch here...

Hi Leelai,

Thanks for your response. I think I am at a point where the new pad is the way forward... I regularly clear the internet data as a general thing anyway, I will look at the rest of your post but I think I have done it already :( Technology isn't liking me in the last month, my Xbox got the red ring of death last week as well! :(

Anyways hope you're all having a good weekend.

I love upstate NY, the Adirondaks and Lake George... I love spending time there in the summer. :)

Yes I do think the new iPad is the way to go for you.

I have times like that with technology and all things electric actually, if there's a lemon out there chances are I'll buy it.
I have already had a laptop, TV and fridge that just didn't even turn on from new!

Long weekend here in Australia, so I'm enjoying the break, hope yours is great too!

Hello All,

I am happy to report that in the last week I had my ppi claim come back successful and I am now the proud owner of the New iPad :) I immediately noticed the difference in regards to the problems I had with my iPad 1... Although safari still crashes occasionally :( but from the sounds of it, a lot of people are having that problem. That aside, I have been having lots of fun with the camera on this thing... My victims... Not so much!! Lol.

Hope everyone is well.

Rebecca

Whoo hoo! There's a new iPad in the house! :D

Glad you got the new one and that now it works better for you. I, too, came from an iPad1, and there is a rather large difference between the two.

Have fun designing those homes! :)

Marilyn

Hi Marylin,

The house thing works much better since and ive been having fun annoying people with the camera. I've been looking at cydia apps which I hadn't done much with before any good suggestions :)
