hi there

I am a new member who is thinking about buying an ipad, particularly as I am going to the States in 2 weeks so it would be a lot cheaper to purchase there.

I am weighing up the pros and cons, trying to be honest with myself about what I will use it for - and therefore which one would be best for me - and if its a good move for me because frankly, I am not the most technically minded of people!:D But I do read a lot for research, paticularly newspapers and am fed up carting around 100s of photocopied newspaper articles when I could read them on an ipad instead and then - bonus! - store them for future use as well. I also want to read books, watch movies when travelling and answer emails/surf the web when need be.

Hi there Kate and welcome.

When I got my first iPad I had no real idea what I would use it for......now I wouldn't be without it!

There is lots of good advice and info on here plus plenty of members all too willing to help with any problems.

Remember, search is your friend. If you can't find the answer you need and you post a question then give as much info as you can to help members help you i.e. iPad 1 or 2, iOS version and name of app if the problem is with a specific app........and please don't forget to read the rules http://www.ipadforums.net/forum-rules-help-info/2119-forum-rules-everybody-please-read.html

These are the hacking section rules for all you jail breakers (and would be jail breakers) http://www.ipadforums.net/ipad-hacking/2892-hacking-section-rules-please-read.html

We also have an app for this forum. The link to download the app is: Discussion Forum for iPad Users for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store

You can download the manual for your iPad here http://support.apple.com/manuals/ and in iBooks search for "iPad user guide for" and you will find free comprehensive manuals for both iOS 4 and 5.

If you have other Apple products or are interested in other Apple kit then why not join our sister forum too at http://www.appleforums.net/

Hi Kate - welcome to the forum! :)

As Gabriel has stated you will be surprised after a few months the many uses the iPad will offer! As to your needs above, reading books, magazines, and watching movies are all functions that I've used on my iPad 2 (plus many more!).

Also, the iPad w/ Wi-Fi only for us has replaced my laptop(s) while travelling - we invariably are in places w/ Wi-Fi available and on the road mainly used for responding to email & for surfing the web, so the device is fine (also bring along an Apple BT keyboard); in addition, a bonus on the road is the iPad/keyboard combo packs easily and if flying does not need to be removed from your carry-on bag!

Good luck in your choice -
