Most odd...

I've just travelled 200 miles or so up north in my car (all in the countryside), and the Maps App pinpointed my position at all times to great accuracy. I used it as a 'silent' sat nav to great effect

I do not have 3g enabled.

Wtf??

Could it have used the slower cellular network that was on phones before 3G came out? Just a guess but yes a weird one indeed.

3G capable iPads have a built in GPS receiver.Your iPad would have pinpointed your location that way.

Oh I thought the GPRS and 3G were connected in someway, cool.

They do share some circuitry, but the GPS will work even if you remove your sim card.
