The ASUS utility works well even on my intel based desktop. There are reported problems with some older computers.

with the ios 4.2, there'll be no need of this.

the new ios will allow you to charge your ipad via usb .

Only the time can answer your question, as u know it' still in beta stadium, but it usually dont takes long time between the beta release to the official release.
