What's new

On this day in history.

Yes, I've seen that film - use to own the Creature From the Black Lagoon trilogy on DVD - the 'Revenge......' was the second movie in that series - I did not really like either of the sequels to the original, so sold the set and bought just the first film on blu-ray (shown below along w/ Julia Adams, one of the best reasons the film deserves repeated viewing, at least for me - ;)) - Dave :)

P.S. have no idea what the '3D' version looks like on a home theater system not having the equipment - the '2D' restoration is quite satisfactory.

I first saw Creature From The Black Lagoon at a 3D film festival at our local library back in the 1970's.

Well, would be interesting to watch my BD of that film in 3D (did receive some excellent ratings) - the first film that I ever saw in 3D was the 1953 House of Wax w/ Vincent Price - I would have been about 7 years old, so was quite thrilling! :)

NOW, just last week, Susan & I saw the new Disney production in 3D The Jungle Book on the big screen - the boy was a real human of course, but all other characters and most of the scenery was CGI - was a fantastic experience. Dave

June 1, 1968;

Helen Keller dies at the age of 87. She was born on June 27, 1880 0n a farm near Tuscumbia, Alabama. She was a normal baby until the age of 19 months, when she contracted an illness which left her deaf and blind. She was taught to read and communicate by sign language by Anne Sullivan, a teacher from the Perkins Institute in Boston. Her early life story was immortalized in the Broadway play and movie "The Miracle Worker". Helen Keller - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Two years ago, Susan and I were visiting the north Alabama area and toured Helen Keller's birthplace and museum - left a post in my travelogue of that trip - check HERE (post #4), if interested. Dave :)

June 2 - Just a Few Events Below of Interest to Me:

1865 -
American Civil War Ends 'officially' w/ the "an event that is generally regarded as marking the end of the Civil War, Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith, commander of Confederate forces west of the Mississippi, signs the surrender terms offered by Union negotiators. With Smith’s surrender, the last Confederate army ceased to exist, bringing a formal end to the bloodiest four years in U.S. history (Source)."

Of course, the more common events stating the ending of the American Civil War are: 1) Lee's surrender to Grant at Appomattox on April 9, 1865; and 2) Johnston's surrender to Sherman at the Bennett Place on April 17, 1865 (both of which have been in some of my travelogues) - but there were lesser results and less known disbandments and surrenders - plenty of information in this Wiki Article, for those interested.

1953 - "On June 2, 1953, Queen Elizabeth II is formally crowned monarch of the United Kingdom in a lavish ceremony steeped in traditions that date back a millennium. A thousand dignitaries and guests attended the coronation at London’s Westminster Abbey, and hundreds of millions listened on radio and for the first time watched the proceedings on live television. After the ceremony, millions of rain-drenched spectators cheered the 27-year-old queen and her husband, the 30-year-old duke of Edinburgh, as they passed along a five-mile procession route in a gilded horse-drawn carriage (Source)."

1962 - "Ray Charles was one of the founding fathers of soul music—a style he helped create and popularize with a string of early 1950s hits on Atlantic Records like “I Got A Woman” and “What’d I Say.” This fact is well known to almost anyone who has ever heard of the man they called “the Genius,” but what is less well known—to younger fans especially—is the pivotal role that Charles played in shaping the course of a seemingly very different genre of popular music. In the words of his good friend and sometime collaborator, Willie Nelson, speaking before Charles’ death in 2004, Ray Charles the R&B legend "did more for country music than any other living human being.” The landmark album that earned Ray Charles that praise was Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music, which gave him his third #1 hit in “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” which topped the U.S. pop charts on this day in 1962 (Source)."

Ray Charles is one of our favorite singers from the last century - Susan prefers his later material, especially the country & western numbers and many others - America the Beautiful always a thrill to hear (YouTube below). I have about a dozen CDs of Ray Charles but my two favorites are 'His Greatest Hits, Vols. 1 & 2) on the Dunhill label - bought many years ago and may be OOP, but contains many of the C&W hits, plus others. Dave :)

During the coronation of Queen Elizabeth at Westminster Abbey, a film crew from Canada filmed the entire ceremony on colour film. Immediately after the ceremony the team and its film rushed to the airport where they caught a charter flight back to Canada. The plane had a film processing lab on board and by the time the plane landed in Canada, the film was developed, printed, and ready for broadcast. A few hours after the ceremony, TV viewers in Canada saw the coronation on TV.

Cool! I would have been 7 years old and believe that I saw 'something' on the coronation, just cannot remember; but, there are a LOT of YouTube options of varying length - I started the one below which is in color and narrated by Laurence Olivier - its 78 minutes long! Watched some portions - would really be interesting if a restoration was done of the film? Dave :)

P.S. Added another YouTube link - same film as my previous one - said to be 'best version' but looks pretty much similar - Dave
