The Imitation Game (2014) is a recent film about Turing and his team's efforts to break the German enigma code - brief synopsis below from IMBD - excellent reviews & numerous nominations - recommended! Dave :)

Based on the real life story of legendary cryptanalyst Alan Turing, the film portrays the nail-biting race against time by Turing and his brilliant team of code-breakers at Britain's top-secret Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park, during the darkest days of World War II.

Yesterday, Susan & I spent the afternoon at the Arts & Crafts area of Gatlinburg, TN - in a Native American gift shop, I saw a number of 'Indian t-shirts' - the one below gave me a chuckle (I added the names at the bottom for clarity - of course, any number of famous Native American leaders over several centuries could have been chosen) - as to a relationship, Sitting Bull was one of the leaders/inspirers of the 'combined' Indian forces attacking Custer and his men; Crazy Horse was another at Little Bighorn who might have been a better choice over Geronimo? Did not buy one - I own SO MANY t-shirts, virtually all collected on trips like this one. Dave :)

P.S. as I was looking for the images below, another t-shirt that tempted me even more is the third pic about 'Homeland Security' - ;)

Tunneling in the Civil War, the Mann Act, Korean War starts, & Michael Jackson Dies!

Well, a number of differing events today from the Civil War in 1864 to the death of Michael Jackson in 2009 (Source) - Dave :)

1864 - Union begins tunneling in the Petersburg, VA siege, Grant vs. Lee - on July 30, a huge cache of gunpowder was exploded leading to the Battle of the Crater - an amazing but ultimately a tragic event for the Union soldiers - discussed in my Civil War travelogue from last year, if interested.

1910 - Mann Act passed, a.k.a. White Slave Traffic Act - girls, prostitution, consensual sex, etc. - what was this about? Charlie Chaplin & Chuck Berry some of the more famous prosecutions - never completely understood this one?

1950 - Korean War begins - one of those ‘forgotten wars’ - not many movies made about the conflict (BUT some good ones!) - however, over 55,000 American troops were killed - and the issue of the ‘split’ country is still not resolved and a potential danger to the world.

2009 - Michael Jackson dies at age 50 y/o! One of the most commercially successful entertainers in history suffers from acute cardiac arrest due to a fatal combination of drugs - still a story in progress?

James Smithson Dies in 1829 - Founding Donor of the Smithsonian Institution

James Smithson (1765-1829) bequeaths his estate to his nephew who died six years after his death without children. On July 1, 1836, the U.S. Congress authorized acceptance of Smithton’s gift, which amounted to $500,000 (over $12 million today - Source) - the first building completed was the Smithsonian Institution Building or the Smithsonian Castle - see quotes below w/ links.

The early 1970s was my first visit to Washington, D.C. (actually lived there for 3 months as part of my radiology training at the AFIP) - Susan & I have visited numerous times and need to return, several new museums have opened. Dave :)

In Genoa, Italy, English scientist James Smithson dies after a long illness, leaving behind a will with a peculiar footnote. In the event that his only nephew died without any heirs, Smithson decreed that the whole of his estate would go to “the United States of America, to found at Washington, under the name of the Smithsonian Institution, an Establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge.” Smithson’s curious bequest to a country that he had never visited aroused significant attention on both sides of the Atlantic (Source).

President Andrew Jackson sent diplomat Richard Rush to England to negotiate for transfer of the funds, and two years later Rush set sail for home with 11 boxes containing a total of 104,960 gold sovereigns, eight shillings, and seven pence, as well as Smithson’s mineral collection, library, scientific notes, and personal effects. After the gold was melted down, it amounted to a fortune worth well over $500,000. After considering a series of recommendations, including the creation of a national university, a public library, or an astronomical observatory, Congress agreed that the bequest would support the creation of a museum, a library, and a program of research, publication, and collection in the sciences, arts, and history. On August 10, 1846, the act establishing the Smithsonian Institution was signed into law by President James K. Polk (Source).

Not sure that I've ever been on parts of Route 66 - looking at the map above and the one added below; I've been to all of those states, but not in the areas of the road in many - possibilities include Chicago, St. Louis, and the Southwest, especially New Mexico & Arizona - of course, celebrated in the Nat King Cole early recording w/ him @ the piano - Dave :)

I believe it's still possible to drive on 85% of the original Route 66. Some stretches have been abandoned and some have been converted into parts of the modern interstate system but most of it is still there. Recently some of these stretches of Route66 have had new "Historic Route 66" signs installed.

A while back, I almost bought a book on Route 66 - more of a history than a guide/atlas - cannot remember the name, but in checking Amazon, there are plenty of choices - below just the top 'relevant' hits on the website - would be interesting to travel some of those still 'opened' segments - I'm pretty sure that I was on portions of the actual highway or converted interstate roads in the Southwest. Dave :)
