August 8, 2000 - The submarine H.L. Hunley was raised from ocean bottom after 136 years. The sub had been lost during an attack on the U.S.S. Housatonic in 1864. The Hunley was the first submarine in history to sink a warship.

On this day in 1974,Gerald R. Ford became the only non-elected President of the United States. He had been appointed to replace Spiro Agnew as Vice-President when Spiro Agnew resigned in disgrace. He became President when Nixon resigned.
 
On this day in the year 378,a large Roman army under Valens,the Emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire was defeated by the Visigoths under the leadership of Fritigern. Two thirds of the Roman army,including Valens himself were killed. The battle took place at Adrianople in present day Turkey.

Presumably, the plumb line was invented later.

I'll give it a try. I'm in the oil sands right now. I see why the environmentalists are complaining. Those tailings ponds are scary (and big). I know that reclamation is built in to every project but I don't think anyone knows how to get rid of that stuff. That filth is just sitting there until someone can figure it out.

No photos allowed here, by the way. Very secretive. At least they trust me not to use my iPhone to take 'em. Getting a life ban from the site is incentive enough, I guess.

Sounds like they've got something to hide.
But it's the nature of the beast. We do things because we can. Any and all repercussions of our actions is considered to be the cost of doing business.

There was a shameful episode in the history of Britain. 10th August 2011, the riots took hold in various towns and cities. It has transpired that the events spurred the criminal element to loot and set fire to property.

Shameful.
