There are many reasons why you'd want to lock your iPad:
1) if someone steals your iPad, it'll take them longer to get into it (and for them to get into it, they'd be deleting everything on it so you're safe from reason #2...)
2) if someone just picks it up to look at it, they won't be able to snoop in your emails, websites you have saved, accounts you have hooked up with credit cards (e.g. Amazon, eBay, etc) or online banking
3) your kids can't fiddle around with it and accidentally buy something from the AppStore or iTunes (or delete something by accident)
4) etc etc etc
Sure it takes a couple extra seconds to unlock it using a 4 digit passcode, but it's a little extra security step.
