OnLive has just announced at E3 that it is about to launch its iPad Player app, which will enable you to play cloud-based console games on your iPad, and with iOS 5’s new AirPlay mirroring feature, you’ll eventually be able to play the games on your HDTV too. When using the app, which will be available this Fall, your iPad instantly becomes a touch/motion controller, or standalone cloud gaming system. In terms of using the tablet as a touch controller, it’s a lot like what Nintendo has just unveiled at E3 with its Nintendo Wii U, with the only difference being, as OnLive CEO Steve Perlman says, that the Wii U won’t be available until sometime in 2012, whereas OnLive’s iPad app should have full functionality available when iOS 5 is released in the Fall.

The OnLive Player App for iPad will enable gameplay of virtually all OnLive games on your iPad using either touch controls or OnLive’s new Universal Wireless Controller, as well as enabling the table to be used as a touch and motion controller combined with an HDTV, PC or Mac, allowing both synchronized or independent video on the tablet and HDTV screen, and facilitating combined gameplay with tablet and HDTV, or separate gameplay on tablet and HDTV.

“The power of the cloud is definitely the theme this week, displacing what had been assumed to be platforms that could never be displaced,†said Steve Perlman. “The OnLive Player App for iPad and Android shows how with the power of the cloud, the question is not whether cloud gaming will be able to catch up to consoles, it will be whether consoles will be able to catch up to cloud gaming.â€
