Partial screen failure?

iPad Gen 1

Appears to be partial digitizer failure (see pic)

Is this a failed screen or something else? Apple wants $420 to repair a 18 month old $499.00 iPad. If it is just a screen failure I'll buy a replacement on eBay and attempt to repair myself.

First of all, have a look at the iFixit teardown of the iPad1 to see what's involved. It's quite difficult. But you might want to plead with the Apple Store; they have been excellent at replacing - one time only - cracked screens outside warranty. Maybe they might take pity...
