Hi Everyone!!

I own a Home Systems Company and we are drifting into the commercial world with systems that are controlled by iPads and are of course running into issues that I am hoping this forum can help with. One of our large commercial jobs (which is very cool) is a Student Housing Complex. We are controlling all the amenity spaces with iPads ( A/V, HVAC, Lighting, Fireplaces, etc). The Student Housing is like the Ritz of Student housing and includes a 40 seat theatre, video game room, cafe, etc. The ipads are installed in iPort inwall docks and used more or less as touchscreens. The spaces are controlled with an app but the issue we have is relating to password lock. We need to more or less stop the ability to put a password lock on the unit. We don't want to provide the students with the lock passcode as that allows them to basically go in and change it to something and then we have to reset the iPad and start all over ( yes they are troublemakers). Is there a way to stop the iPads from having the need for a passcode (disable or remove the function entirley) or is there a way where we can enter one and then never have it pop up?

Thanks in advance for any help!!

I'll bet if u jailbreak them you would be able to do it. Not sure u want to go that route. Just a thought

Hi Windyrock - welcome to the forum! :)

Don't think that I can help w/ a specific suggestion but am intrigued by your situation - and YES young people will always try to screw things up, if possible - :D

I'm curious if in your setup whether you are using some type of 'proprietary app' and also whether the iPads in their stations are on continuous power? Without 'jailbreaking' the devices and/or having Apple help to disable the functions needed, I'm just not sure how you can accomplish your goal(s) - I'll be quite interested in the opinions of some of our more experienced members - good luck and please keep us updated - Dave :)

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the responses...I don't mind jailbreaking but I am probably going to pursue having someone develop a solution for us. The owners of the project yesterday told me they only want the control App to run and nothing else so now I am researching that..lol..however with that info I would have installed a touchscreen based system not iPads..what is the point of using iPads if you can't surf the web or run a few other select apps..I may ignore their instructions and see if I can work with a developer to make us something that is stable and does what I would like. There are 5-7 more of these projects coming. This is the guinea pig so I have a lot of leeway.

As for your questions Giradman...The control System is Elan Home Systems G! We have been an Elan dealer for over 10 years..great company with great products that are stable and work!! They developed their own app called G! mobile.. its in the app store and is free...doesnt really do much without the hardware but you can check it out. The iPads are installed in iPort CM2000's. The product says it has limitations for power but what we did was run heavier gauge wire ( than cat5) to each location and they are constantly being charged. The iPads don't get continuous use so I don't see a problem with them ever draining too much.
