Question about sound

I just want to make sure that your device is an iPad Air 2: is there a switch next to the Volume buttons? In that case, it's not an Air 2, and that switch (button to toggle to the left/right) can also be used to mute your device.

Might be a stuck mute switch. While not common it was known to happen when upgrading to iOS 6 and 7. If you are on iOS 8? this would be the first I've heard that the bug still exists.

The Reset All Settings that scifan57 suggested should fix this.

Edit: Oops. Missed that you have an iPad Air 2. No mute switch. I guess Reset All Settings is all you can try. Ignore the rest, but I'll leave it just in case it can help someone else.

But you can try something a bit less drastic first. Go Settings > General and change the "Use Side Switch To" option; to whatever it isnt'. Reset the iPad (Hold down the Home and Power buttons until the Apple Logo appears). When it reboots return the side switch setting to whatever you wanted it to be.

The symptoms you are describing are exactly what happens when the iPad is muted. Notifications, system sounds, and some apps will be silenced, but music an other apps will not. This is why we keep coming back to the Mute switch and it's settings.

Mute was not meant to silence everything. Just the unexpected sounds; as a way of remaining polite when you are in a meeting or a theater. If you mean to make sound (like play music) it should be unaffected. Some games and apps act unpredictably, because whether they mute or not is up to the developer.

I think that there may be a sound bug with 8.1.2. I had problems, noted elsewhere here, with sound and the 8.1.2 upgrade and I have since noticed a loss of sound at times, including just now, for no apparent reason. This is most noticeable (to me) by the lack of the battery charging sound when I connect the mains charger. (So, with the most recent problem, I checked for sound from an internet radio station I access at times and clicking when I type- both silent. Previously they had been working.)

My cure (at present) is to power off completely and then power up again when sound returns in my 'expected areas'. (I have not adjusted anything else.)
