i know the new IOS can be jailbroken, I have 1st gen running 4.2.1 jailbreak...is the new jailbreak UNtethered or Tethered? And which one should I use Greenpoi0n or RedSn0w?

From what I read iOS 5 was jail broken with a tethered greenp0ison jailbreak.

I don't think that's what you read, but I could be mistaken!

You read it was jailbroken thanks to the limera1n exploit and it is of course tethered. That's a big difference. And for the avoidance of doubt, there is no jailbreak tool in the wild, nor should you expect one for a while yet.
Beta versions of iOS do not get JB tools released, otherwise Apple patches them for the GM!
