Reading iPad in the Sun

Is there a setting that allows you to read iPad while outside or on a beach? I tried but couldn't see anything on the screen while all around me there were people with Kindles and other types of pads. I suspect that it is much like my iPhone which I can't see either. This would be a great improvement in the reading part of the device.

Kindles and iPad have entirely different display technologies. But there are some anti-glare screen protectors for the iPad. The Kindle is generally better outdoors and the iPad generally better indoors, though.
