Repeated demands to verify Apple ID password

Can anyone shed light on why my iPad wants my Apple ID password almost daily? About half the time, it also tells me my account has been locked, so I have to jump through more hoops and enter the password several more times to unlock it.

It's stupid crap like this that makes people hate Apple.
