Retina Display rumor

I just read on a magazine that Apple signed exclusivity deals with retina display suppliers, so non-Apple devices will not have retina displays for a very long tme. Is there any truth to this?

It is IMPOSSIBLE for that to occur. Anyone can produce a screen that has a pixel density high enough and at a particular viewing distance so that the indvidual pixels are no longer visible. The only thing that Apple has is a Trademark on the phrase "Retina Display". There are no patents that will stand up in court for it.

Heh, its not really impossible. If any supplier could do it with no problem it would have been done long ago. There are probably sitll only a few major suppliers that could make enough for a mass market device, and Apple could in fact try to get them to sign an exclusivity deal in exchange for the large business of supplying the iPad 3 and I know that there are three suppliers who will be making screens for the 3 (just Samsung for the launch batch). Another supplier could get one out eventually but it could hold off similar resolutions for the year or something like that.

However, I'd be shocked to find out this actually occurred.

The thread is obviously about other tablets being produced with equivalent screens and Apple theoretically trying to prevent their release with exclusivity agreements. If they can't produce enough for a mass produced tablet, its completely irrelevant.

Mass production for an Android tablet is around 250K to 500K units currently over a 3 to 6 month period. Apple is around 5.2 million per month. So the term mass production is rather liberal when you start talking anything besides Apple.

The only manufacturer making any inroads against the iPad is Samsung, who is making the displays. It would be better for them to try and make the IGZO displays work before diverting something that really helps their bottom line. And do not forget, Apple has two other manufacturers that are trying hard to be screen suppliers. Sammy aint dumb.
