I have access to gmail on my ipad 2.

I just sent a pdf file via gmail.

The email shows up with the pdf attached.

How can I save the attached pdf file to the ipad 2 so that it reads the file locally instead of having to download it again in order to open it.?

Tried the long press and you are right, the PDF opens. But there is no way to save it.

What are goodreader or iBooks?

Goodreader and iBooks are apps.

Good reader costs, and I don't have it but it is supposedly the best thing out there for a multitude of purposes.

iBooks is a reader for .epub and .pdf files that is free from the App Store.

If you install iBooks, whenever you download a .pdf you will be given the option to "Open in...". This saves it in iBooks so you can keep it without having to download it again.

I save PDF files in iBooks all the time and can state that it works just like Kevin says it does.
