Are you using iOS 4.3? If so, the little switch by the volume control might be set to lock the orientation. Try sliding it and see. If you're iOS 4.2 then the orientation lock is set on the multi-task bar. Double tap the Home button and swipe the screen right. They'll find iPod controls and the orientation lock

A quick way to tell.
Look up by the time in the right top corner. If your screen lock is on you will see a little lock with an arrow circling it.
Just upgrading to 4.3 won't change the lock back to the switch, btw. It did not for me anyway. You have to go into settings an change it manually. Settings >> General >> Use Side Switch to: and choose you poison.
