If you’re lucky enough to be the proud owner of a shiny new iPad 2, and you’ve been waiting for the perfect app to show it off to your friends, neighbours and random strangers on the street, then today is your lucky day, with the news from MacStories that an already awesome and award-winning star gazing iPad app, Star Walk, just got even better with an iPad-2 friendly update that makes it one of the first apps to bring augmented reality to the iPad 2.

Star Walk’s creators, Vito Technology, say that they have released the special update as a way of celebrating the 50th anniversary on April 12 of the first human spaceflight, which was completed by Yuri Gagarin in his Vostok spacecraft on April 12, 1961. The new update, Star Walk 5.2, introduces several new features, including support for up to 720p TV OUT for iPad 1; support for full HD TV OUT for iPad 2; a calendar of Celestial Events so that you can plan your stargazing; a new, true-to-life picture of the skies with glittering stars, and, best of all, augmented reality for the iPad 2, which lets you point-and-display the sky in real time using the iPad 2’s camera. Looks absolutely amazing!
