No extra software required at all. Just turn on the hotspot on your phone. Or to reiterate an earlier response, "Just turn your iPhone's "hotspot" on and the iPad will recognize and connect with the password you set on the phone."
It works great, I use it all the time with my iPhone4 and New iPad.
