Texting

I have been looking for a text app that works on ipad3 and in the uk. Will work and send to non subscribers to the app. I have looked at textplus but this is US and whatsapp which has to be jailbroken which I dont want to do. I seem to remember at some stage that the i messenger programme would work for non apple users by changing the colour of the send to line but I might be imagining that, any help and suggestions please

Hi woodchip.

Lots of us are guilty of that at one time or another. However, having read your question, I can answer some parts of it, though not the useful bits, I fear.

iMessage will not work on the iPad as you suppose. It is only usable between iDevices. If you send a message from an iPhone and the recipient has a non iOS device the background will indeed turn green and the message will be sent, but it will go as an SMS message using telephony, rather than as an iMessage, using Internet data. The iPad lacks the telephony software to do this.

I'm still looking for a texting solution for the iPad. About all I can suggest right now for cross platform use is Skype, which allows text messaging but is still not exactly what you are looking for.

However, keep looking here because if it exists, we will find it.

Thanks Kevin, as you say it can be done on iphone but not on iPad, seems to me that apple could solve the problem if they wanted to but I shall keep looking.It seems wierd to me that Skype can do it on iPad, but of course this is a subscription based item on their site.

True. Although Skype to Skype messages are free, regardless of the platform.

But Whatsapp does not work on the iPad - only on the iPhone!
